There’s nothing I love more than puttering in my butterfly garden on a cool morning. But that garden needs the bees! This Earth Day I’d like to introduce you to Matthew Shepherd of The Xerces Society and the new book “100 Plants To Feed The Bees”. How many stories have you read lately that highlight how threatened bees are? They’re losing their natural habitats to overdevelopment, the use of insecticides and pesticides and changes in our environment. And that phrase “busy as a bee” couldn’t be closer to the truth – they a critical part of a healthy environment that [More]

Friday, April 21st marks the one-year anniversary of the shocking news of Prince’s death. Author Ben Greenman has a new book that’s not a gossipy tell-all, but rather a tribute to the icon and what defined his life and his music.
If you want to know what the creative process was like for the Prince of Paisley Park and why he had to go to war with his own record label this is the book with the answers. But what about those other tasty tidbits of knowledge that real fans already know, but are new to you? And one of [More]

It’s not often that the Suncoast Animal League gets domestic bunnies coming through the shelter, but we have a pair who have been together most of their lives and are attached at the hip, so to say. Meet Cupcake (white & black) and Camo (stripes).
Cupcake is 5-years-old and was born in a bunny rescue so she has always been an indoor pet. She loves her blue igloo and to snuggle in a soft blanket. Camo is probably 5 or 6-years-old. He was rescued from a horse farm years ago and has been Cupcake’s best friend ever since. Camo is [More]

I was looking for a new Ann-Venture this past weekend and I found a wonderful new market. But not just any market. What I found was the Winter Garden Farmers Market, ranked #1 not just in our state, but in the nation. Just last November the American Farmland Trust looked at over 7,000 markets across the nation and gave that top spot to Winter Garden. The vendors in the market are very proud of that and love to tell you how happy they are to score a space. But let’s start at the very beginning, with a sunrise [More]

It’s easy to think of arthritis as “an older person’s disease.” So not true. It can impact you at anytime in your life and doesn’t discriminate. There are more than 100 kinds of arthritis, and that why I and thousands will walk on Saturday, May 6th at Al Lopez Field in Tampa. I have Lupus. Know what that is? It’s an auto-immune disease that can affect every organ in my body and has no cure, we just try and keep it under control. That’s easier said than done lately and that’s why I want to see as many of you as possible helping us [More]

You’re never too old for the prom! This Saturday night I’ll be one of the judges for “Wish Upon A Bone.” This will be a special night for senior dogs at the Dog House of Safety Harbor on Main St. from 4-8 pm. This inaugural prom is free, so why not your glitz and glam on and join more than a dozen rescue groups that will be on site along with many of what we call our more “seasoned” dogs who are still looking for their forever homesThey’ll be strutting their stuff down the red carpet along 8th Avenue, hoping for that King [More]

When I think of Anthony Sullivan, I think of someone who could sell me just about anything. You probably know him best for the many products he’s pitched on TV, but Anthony has a very serious side when it comes to water safety. You may have seen him at the South Tampa YMCA getting in a workout as a part of the St Pete Masters. But as a certified adult-learn-to-swim instructor his message is simple – learn to swim!
April is Adult Learn To Swim Month and the statistics on just how many adults do not know how to swim are [More]

You know what happens when I started typing in “Florida parks” and “black bears?” I find the Black Bear Scenic Byway for my new Ann-Venture through the Ocala National Forest. The Byway is 60 miles worth of incredible scenery and home to the largest population of black bears in our state. It’s also a great chance to do some off roading (and NOT in a Honda HRV) to experience what is called “The Big Scrub.” Oh yes, I did get to see some of it. It’s an area without much water, and the sand pine forest had adapted, [More]
