Meet Yam, Our SAL Pet of the Week

By Ann Kelly

Tuesday was National Pet Day, and what a great reminder of so many shelter pets that needs to be someone’s forever friend. So let us introduce you to our Pet of the Week from the Suncoast Animal League. Remember “Potato Pup” Yam? He was always one of the more quirky pups in the litter of eleven. Shy and timid, it has taken longer for him to warm up to the humans. Because of his shyness, Yam is the last Potato Pup who needs a home.

Yam has been in one of our more experienced foster homes for several weeks while they have been working on his socialization. He goes on a morning and afternoon walk every day, and has really learned to love that special time outside, especially by the side of his foster dog sister, Paisley.

When inside the house, Yam is his own man. He may not want to be gushed upon or cuddled like a lot of dogs, but he does want your company and will follow you from room to room or sit with you when you watch TV. And if you happen to have a snack to share with him, he’s all in!

Yam’s ideal home will have a confident dog to help guide him. He needs confident adults who will not push him to be a regular attention-seeking dog, but will instead let him give and receive love on a quieter basis. Children make him a bit nervous so an adult only household is best. He loves his walks in the neighborhood and also needs a fenced back yard to run in. He also likes kitties.

Yam has been neutered, microchipped and is up-to-date with vaccines. He is still in his foster home so please email us to be put in touch with his foster family.at Foster@SuncoastAnimalLeague.org. Follow the work of the Suncoast Animal League on Facebook and Twitter. There’s exciting news about their new thrift shop!
