When it came right down to it there was one person who gave me the motivation to do something I never thought I would – complete a 5K. I did that at the Goody Goody 5K thanks to Richard Gonzmart. Richard embraces life head on and never looks back, not even when he was diagnosed and treated for prostate cancer. And as Richard told me in our interview, along with Columbia Restaurant Group Chief Marketing Officer Michael Kilgore, it’s just not something most men are comfortable talking about let alone acting as a spokesperson for. So of course that’s exactly what Richard decided to do and why we’re all getting together on Father’s Day for the fourth annual “Richard’s Father’s Day Family Walk/Jog” on Sunday, June 18, 2017, at 8 a.m. at Ulele restaurant in Tampa Heights. What sets this walk apart from many others is that 100 percent of the proceeds will benefit the Advanced Prostate Cancer Collaboration (APCC) at Moffitt Cancer Center, the only National Cancer Institute-designed Comprehensive Cancer Center in Florida. In the three years of this event, the Gonzmart Family Foundation has donated $245,000.
This is a fun morning. You can walk, jog or run but it’s not a timed race and you certainly can’t beat the scenery along the Tampa Riverwalk. It’s best to sign up right now so you make sure to get one of the great event shirts. The all-ages entry fee is $25 per person through June 16, and $30 June 17 and June 18 (day of) and includes a T-shirt. Children under 12 are free, but must register the morning of the event, with a parent or guardian. Packet pickup and registration will be the morning of the event, starting at 7 am but why wait?
This is my new Father’s Day tradition, and I’ll be walking in memory of my father Stephen. Bring your family together and begin a tradition of your home and enjoy a healthy start to the day with Richard Gonzmart and our family from Cox Media Group Tampa Bay and The Dove. We have all the information you need right here. Oh, and by the way Father’s Day is very special at Ulele – make your reservation today.
