Here They Grow!

  • 6:28 am Friday, August 10th, 2018 by Ann Kelly

My friends at the Suncoast Animal League have been enjoying great success with the Suncoast Animal League Thrift Shop on Alternate 19 in Palm Harbor, just around the corner from the shelter. That means they could use a little help  from their friends in the form of volunteers at the shop. It’s a fantastic place to find bargains, cute handmade items for your pets and if you’re very lucky the place to meet one of the shelter pets getting socialized. Yes, that means you get to cuddle and pet them! Just click on that link for all you [More]

Lazy Sunday Mornings

  • 2:55 pm Sunday, August 5th, 2018 by Ann Kelly

What is a warm, sunny Sunday morning meant for? A quiet walk among on the boardwalk of Brooker Creek Preserve where the loudest noise might be the croak of a frog, the cry of a hawk and if you’re lucky the grunt of a gator. But this Sunday morning was literally all about the trees reflecting on the water and sun spilling through those trees. It’s one of my favorite ways to start my day and always makes for a peaceful Ann-Venture. Enjoy.

And by the way if there’s somewhere you’d like to suggest I take a Sunday morning Ann-Venture [More]

A Book For The Birds

  • 5:42 am Monday, July 30th, 2018 by Ann Kelly

For all the Ann-Ventures I’ve been on I still need to work on my bird identifying skills. I love being outdoors but I’d love it even more if I knew the names of all the beautiful fine feathered friends I’ve taking pictures of. But once again National Geographic for Kids has come up with a book that I’m keeping a copy of in my car – Bird Guide of North American from Jonathan Alderfer. He’s the expert having spent ten years as National Geographic’s resident birding expert at their headquarters in Washington, D.C., along with writing. editing and illustrating more than [More]

On Island Time

  • 4:15 am Wednesday, July 25th, 2018 by Ann Kelly

Residents of Anna Maria Island take a great deal of pride in their island home and rightly so. The iconic City Pier, beautiful views and the many shops and restaurants make for a wonderful way of life. But Hurricane Irma was anything but kind to the Pier and it’s now almost completely dismantled. Last Sunday I decided to see the sunrise myself and took the early morning trip across the Sunshine Skyway. While standing in front of what was left of the Pier I met a local man by the name of Brent Van Winkle. I had to smile [More]

Back-To-School Sales Tax Holiday Dates

  • 4:04 am Friday, July 20th, 2018 by Ann Kelly

I doubt the kids will get as excited as you are anytime we mention heading back to school (less than a month). But this is what we wait for – the chance to save and pay no sales tax on a long list of supplies for the next school year. The dates for the back-to-school sales tax holiday have been announced, and the full list from the Florida Department of Revenue runs some four pages so take a look now and start working on a game plan for August 3rd through August 5th.

Page three through four are where [More]

Lend A Helping Paw

  • 9:02 am Thursday, July 12th, 2018 by Ann Kelly

How do you ever say no to a sweet little dog like Clover…and the entire Madeira Beach Fire Department? You don’t. I’ve told you Clover’s story before but in case you missed that, the short version is she survived a fire thanks to her Mom laying on top of the pups to protect them (cue tears). But Clover did suffer some injuries and to help cover her vet bills the MBFD is offering a special limited edition t-shirt. It was designed by the great folks at the MBFD to help their Suncoast Animal League alum and now official firehouse [More]

Turtle Nesting Season

  • 6:33 am Thursday, July 12th, 2018 by Ann Kelly

It’s nesting season on Florida beaches and we’ve already had at least one incident of damage done to a nest. Mote Marine Laboratory thinks poachers were trying to get to the eggs on Nokomis Beach and ran off before volunteers could get to them. If you see anyone doing damage to a nest please call the FWC’s wildlife alert hotline (888-404-FWCC (3922)) or your local sheriff’s department.

The Clearwater Marine Aquarium is always on guard against such incidents and has rescued and rehabilitated countless turtles and other sea life. I was fortunate enough to watch a release up on Clearwater [More]

A Talk With Toto’s Joseph Williams

  • 4:13 am Friday, June 29th, 2018 by Ann Kelly

Once again I look at the years gone by in music and am tremendously grateful I can still enjoy many of the songs I’ve played so often over the years – and better yet, see them performed live in concert. Toto has sold more than 35 million albums and have gifted us with songs that we still get a chill from the first chords. “Africa,” Rosanna,” “Hold the Line” and so many more. The act is still together and they’re taking it on the road for the “40 Trips Around The Sun Tour’ that makes a stop at Clearwater’s Ruth [More]

Food Safety During Storms

  • 4:21 am Friday, June 8th, 2018 by Ann Kelly

I made it just in time for the sale tax holiday for hurricane prep supplies. It’s over now but that shouldn’t stop you from making sure you have enough supplies to get you through another hurricane season. If Irma taught us anything it pays to have the most important items ready to go like a generator, food and water, and anything that uses batteries like weather radios, fans and lights. I was without power for eight days and let me tell you, opening that fridge and freezer? Nasty!

But on the plus site that fridge has never been cleaner. I [More]

Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday Kicks Off Friday

  • 4:03 am Thursday, May 31st, 2018 by Ann Kelly

Hurricane season 2018 didn’t wait until the official start date of June 1st; Alberto dumped plenty of rain on the bay area leading to some flooding and minor power outages. But if you were caught without backup of some sort you may not have learned a lesson from last year when Hurricane Irma devastated so much of Florida. It’s time to stock up and tax advantage of the sales tax holiday which runs from June 1st-June 7th and covers a wide range of items. We can show you the complete list here along with items that are not [More]
